In the light of the tremendous challenges facing the energy systems of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a number of concepts, roadmaps and scenario studies have emerged, describing potential transformation pathways towards a more sustainable, renewable-based, energy supply future in the region. Our article uses the scientific approach of "transition research" to analyze the most pertinent publications and concepts in this field to identify the key drivers and barriers for the transformation of the regional energy systems. The analysis likewise includes an assessment of possible indicators and indexes that can be used to monitor the sustainability of the transformation process of MENA energy systems.
This study conducted by Wuppertal Institute and Germanwatch explores how the social pillar of sustainability at the local level could be met in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) projects. For this purpose, the authors evaluate the livelihood dimension of CSP technology based on a case study conducted on the 160 MW pilot CSP plant Nooro I in Ouarzazate, Morocco.
Jordan's electricity system has and continues to experience considerable pressures for reform due to continuous increase of electricity demand combined with high dependency on imported fossil fuels and a partially subsidised electricity market. In this paper we use the transitions pathways to examine and analyse pressures on the regime in relation to plausible future developments of particular niches such as renewable energy technologies. Our analysis is methodologically distinct in that we explicitly identify mechanisms operating in the system and relate those to existing scenarios to assess future developments. Currently, we see future developments being sensitive to the actions of key regime actors.
Will climate change stay below the 2 degree target in the 21st century on the basis of the COP 21 results? Looking into challenges and opportunities, this paper answers: To stay below the global 2dt is neither a real choice for the world society nor for businesses and civil societies in specific countries. It is a global guideline, scientifically developed for global negotiations, which should be broken down to national interests and actors. Key questions concerning the energy sector from the perspective of national interests are how to create and sustain a momentum for the inevitable energy transition, how to encourage disruptive innovations, avoid lock in effects, enable rapid deployment of energy efficiency and renewable energies etc. Or in other words: how to get to a competitive, economically benign, inclusive, low carbon and risk minimising energy system. With this background the paper argues that "burden sharing" is a misleading perception of strong climate mitigation strategies. It is more realistic to talk about "benefit sharing", using the monetary benefits and co-benefits of climate mitigation (e.g. energy cost savings, revenues from CO2-tax or emission trading systems) to help vulnerable national and international actors to adapt to the unavoidable climate risks. It has to be demonstrated on country level that the technologies and policy mix of strong climate mitigation and risk-minimising actions are indeed "benefit sharing" strategies which should be chosen anyhow, even if there was no climate change. For China and Germany this paper includes basic findings supporting this view.
Die MENA-Region steht nicht nur vor erheblichen gesellschaftlichen Herausforderungen, sondern weist ebenfalls deutlichen Entwicklungsbedarf im Stromsystem auf und erfordert dessen nachhaltige Transformation. Durch einen möglichst hohen regionalen Verbleib der damit anfallenden Wertschöpfung könnten sich Chancen für Technologieausrüster ergeben. Allerdings herrscht im derzeitigen Marktstadium noch immer hohe Unsicherheit inwieweit zukünftig tatsächlich eine Marktentwicklung stattfindet. Vor diesem Hintergrund erfolgt die Entwicklung eines multikriteriellen Bewertungsrahmens für Investitionen in die lokale Produktion, wobei Aspekte der Transition-Forschung Anwendung finden.
One of the main objectives of impact assessments is to identify potentially significant impacts. However, determining this significance has received very limited attention as a procedural step in social impact assessments. Consequently, only limited research and documentation exists on approaches, survey tools and evaluation methods, especially with regard to participatory approaches and combined participatory-technical approaches. This study aims to address this research gap by developing and applying a joined participatory and technical impact significance evaluation. The approach is applied in a case study which analysed the livelihood impacts of the large-scale concentrated solar power plant NOORO I in Ouarzazate, Morocco.
The analysis shows that although different approaches and significance criteria must be applied when involving both local stakeholders and experts, the linked analysis offers more robust results and an improved basis for decision-making. Furthermore, it was observed in the case study that impacts affecting the social, cultural and political spheres were more often considered significant than impacts affecting the physical and material livelihood dimensions. Regarding sustainability assessments of large-scale renewable energy plants, these findings underline the importance (as for other large-scale infrastructure developments) of placing greater emphasis on the inclusion of social aspects in impact assessments.

Der Schutz des Klimas und die dafür erforderliche Umstellung der Energieversorgung auf erneuerbare Energien ist eine globale Herausforderung, welche nach maßgeschneiderten Lösungen für die unterschiedlichen Klimazonen und Märkte der Erde verlangt. Die verstärkte Solarenergienutzung spielt dabei eine maßgebliche Rolle. Die Rolle Deutschlands als Exportnation beschränkt sich hierbei nicht auf die Klimawende im eigenen Land, sondern beinhaltet auch den weltweiten Export erneuerbarer Energietechnologien.
Die Kosten der photovoltaischen Stromerzeugung (PV) und der Windkraft sind in den vergangenen Jahren erfreulicherweise deutlich gesunken, entsprechend wurden in vielen Ländern große Kapazitäten zugebaut. Die resultierende stark gestiegene Einspeisung fluktuierender Erzeuger stellt Netzbetreiber vor neue Herausforderungen, insbesondere durch die extremen Lastschwankungen für plan- und steuerbare, heute größtenteils fossil befeuerte konventionelle Kraftwerke.

This study intends to provide a comprehensive overview of the water-energy nexus' relevance to the Iranian electricity sector, by illustrating key trends, analysing water-related challenges and identifying knowledge gaps. It summarises the results of a workshop, and a series of dialogues with Iranian energy and water experts, in which both the current situation and future water-related risks and impacts on the Iranian power sector were discussed. Based on those results, it highlights research needs and further options for scientific collaboration.
